GULF SHORES, AL (WALA) -

The Gulf Shores City School Board has made its decision in the search for a superintendent.

Dr. Matt Akin has been offered the job. He emerged as a top candidate among more than two dozen applicants. At a special meeting Monday, the board voted to offer Akin the position. The next step is contract negotiations.

Akin is currently the superintendent of Huntsville City School. He previously served as superintendent for Piedmont City Schools.

The City of Gulf Shores is in the process of separating from the Baldwin County School System. Gulf Shores wants to start its first year in the fall of 2018, but Baldwin County school leaders want to delay the start until 2019. The state school superintendent is expected to make the decision on the start date in the coming days.
