Community calling for action at NAACP town hall meeting in Saraland

Posted: Updated:
SARALAND, AL (WALA) -

Some people in Mobile County are still upset about the controversial arrest of a woman at a Saraland Waffle House. Tonight Mobile County NAACP held a town hall for people to speak their minds.

Since the family, Saraland Police, and Waffle House have all made statements, the NAACP says its time to hear what the community has to say. Community members want to know more and they want to see action from the NAACP.

"It's time to talk, it's time to move, it's time for action," said Dr. Sharon Ingram, a community member.

"I called for a boycott of Waffle House. Not just here locally, but all Waffle Houses," said Representative Napoleon Bracy.

The outrage started because of this video, showing Saraland Police arresting 25-year-old Chikesia Clemons. Some believe the officers used excessive force, but Saraland Police is standing by the officers, saying the arrest was justified.

Dozens were out in Saraland tonight at a town hall organized by the NAACP. There were comments, questions, and some complaints about Saraland Police, Waffle House, and even the NAACP.

"I stand with you. You don't have to look for me because I'm right here in the fight with you and I'm going to be in the fight with you and I'm going to keep on fighting with you until we get justice for your daughter," said Rep. Bracy.

"I'm not waiting on anybody. I'm not waiting on anyone to make my voice heard," added Ingram.

Mobile County NAACP President David Smith's response to the complaints is he's sticking with the process.

"All that means is there is an examination of the issues. Looking at statues, processes, the whole 9 yards. That's the way to get meaningful change done," said Smith.

He says in spite of the criticism from the community, he's not discouraged.

"I understand people are frustrated because it's a little slow, but once it gets done, its done," Smith said.
