Local farmers desperate for rain

Posted: Updated:

This weekend’s forecast is both good and bad news depending on who you are. With a 7.5 inch rain deficit local farmers desperately need the rain, while concert-goers heading to Hangout Fest are hoping to avoid it.

Monday’s scattered showers were a welcomed sight for Summerdale farmer Tim Mullek.

“We planted cotton here Saturday… so this cotton ought to be coming up in about two days,” said Mullek.

In addition to cotton, Mullek has planted peanuts and is harvesting wheat. With a 7.5 inch rain deficit, he and other area farmers are counting on the forecast.

“So we do need a rain… some people need it worse than others. The people with corn really need it bad, people with sod. But there were farmers who maybe haven’t planted any summer crops… and they needed a rain just to get started planting,” said Mullek.

They’re also closely watching the weather on the Gulf Coast, but for entirely different reasons.

With the stage set, crews in Gulf Shores are gearing up for this weekend’s Hangout Fest. As thousands of concert-goers arrive ahead of Friday – they’re hoping it won’t be a rain-out.

“I think we’ve traveled all this way to come down here… it’s going to be a little bit disappointing to say the least, but we are here to have a good time… so that’s what we are going to do – either way,” said one man.

“Still going to go have fun… rain or shine… whatever. It rained two years ago and we still went. Still going to have fun,” said Laura Brown.

It’s what you call – a weather tug of war – one they all know is out of their control.

“I don’t want to be greedy… we do need the rain. A half inch to an inch would be great. I’d love to get the rain by noon on Friday… and then people down there at the beach have a beautiful weekend… I’m not a curmudgeon. That way everyone is happy,” said Mullek.

Hangout Fest is Friday, May 18 – Sunday, May 20.
