Proposed car wash at Midtown site has neighbors upset

Posted: Updated:

FOX10 News is committed to turning the spotlight on issues in your neighborhood.

A number of people in the Midtown area are upset about a proposal to build a business on about 37 acres of land that once housed an old dairy farm.

It was the "Graf Dairy Farm" near the corner of Dauphin Street and Sage Avenue.

People we talked to say they don't necessarily object to development, it's just what's proposed to be built here.

The Mobile City Planning Commission Thursday is scheduled to vote on a proposal to build a car wash with 36 vacuum stalls on the Dauphin Street entrance to the old Graf Dairy Farm near Sage Avenue.

Helena Roldan lives in a neighborhood right behind where the car wash would be built.

Roldan said, "We're a peaceful, quiet, little neighborhood and we love our community, and the noise that could be generated from that sort of business will destroy our neighborhood feel."

Michael Laden lives near the site, too, and said there are a number of issues that concern him.

Laden said, "Drainage: already existing terrible drainage problems to be addressed.  It will exacerbate those issues.  Traffic, where there's going to be a cut through from Sage to Dauphin.  We're concerned about that."

Janice Deuel lives right along side the old farm and is worried about quality of life issues.

Deuel said, "I've lived here for so many years without all that traffic and I just don't think i could get used to it."

Shayla Beaco, the Executive Dir or Build Mobile said the city doesn't take a position on the application but, at the planning commissions request, staff members were asked to examine how car washes are operating in the city.

Beaco said, "Just to give more specifics regarding the number of stalls, hours of operation, potential impacts to the neighborhood. "

We're expected to hear about that at the planning commission meeting Thursday afternoon at 2:00 at Government Plaza.

We've been told the developer is Robert Myers.

We have been trying to get in contact with him.
