CAUGHT IN THE ACT: Man stuffs cigarettes down pants and takes off

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

FOX10 News is committed to putting the spotlight on people “Caught in the Act”. Each week, we work with local law enforcement to show surveillance video in the hope you can help crack the case.

A store owner reached out to FOX10 hoping that our viewers can help identify a man seen stuffing several packs of cigarettes down his pants.

It happened last week at the Raceway on Government Boulevard around 5 a.m. A man is seen pulling into the store and bringing several items up to the cash register.

The surveillance shows the man making sure the cashier is looking his way as he pretends to put four packs of cigarettes inside the bag with the rest of the items. He then points at something else behind the counter.

"He's asking her to grab a pack of Tylenol,” said Mike Seehar, the store owner.

The cashier turns around for just a couple of seconds. That's all the time the man needed to stuff the cigarettes down his pants. When she turns back around, he pretends he was looking for his phone.

Fast forward a few seconds and the man's card is declined. He leaves everything else on the counter and walks out the door. By the time the cashier realized the cigarettes weren’t in the bag with the other items, the man was gone.

Seehar believes the man never had any intention of buying from his store. While $26.87 in cigarettes may not seem like a lot to lose, Seehar says it's a matter of principle. He wants this man caught before he can do it again.

"It's not only unfair to the business, but it's also not fair to the employees,” said Seehar.

If you recognize the man, call Mobile Police.
