The National American Red Cross’ local impact

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

The National American Red Cross is known for running blood drives, and assisting in natural disasters --- not to mention, providing services to members of the American armed forces and their families.

And did you know that the South Alabama district contributes to more than 26,000 hours a year of volunteer service to the community? That's equivalent of 13 full time people helping victims of home fires, local flooding, blood drives, 1st Aid / CPR training, and other services.

Michael Brown, Executive Director for the local Red Cross branch, stopped by our studio during Fox10 News at 4pm to talk more about the organization's impact. 

The Alabama Region provides the following services:

-Disaster Services: When disaster strikes, the Red Cross is ready to provide a place to sleep, warm meals, clothing, emotional support and hope to those affected.
-Services to the Armed Forces: Relays urgent messages between U.S. service
-Preparedness: Provides free disaster preparedness education classes and information to our local communities.
-Health and Safety Services: Offers training in first aid, CPR/AED, swimming and water safety, care giving and more.
-International Services: With more than a century of experience, the American Red Cross works with the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network to meet the needs of the world's most vulnerable communities.
-Blood Services: Collects  blood every day from donors who help ensure a safe supply of blood when it's needed.

The South Alabama Chapter provides programs and services to the citizens in Baldwin, Butler, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Escambia, Mobile, Monroe and Washington counties. Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information or assistance, please contact your local Red Cross office.

On May 21, the National American Red Cross celebrated its Founder's Day. The day marked the anniversary of the founding of the American Red Cross in 1881.
