PRICHARD, AL (WALA) -

The pastor of New Community Church of God in Christ is hoping you can identify a man caught on camera trying to steal from the church Sunday night, July 1.

The pastor believes the crook attempted to steal the both of the church's air conditioning units, but for some reason, the crook gave up, leaving both of the church's AC units, and the lines that connect to them, badly damaged, costing the church thousands of dollars in repairs.

In the church surveillance video, you can see the crook get out of an SUV and run across the church lawn to the the AC units. Using a giant pair of bolt cutters, the crook can be seen cutting through the lock on the fence.

In the video, the crook turns off the power and begins cutting the lines to the AC units, Freon spraying everywhere.

"I believe they were cutting all the lines to take the complete unit," said Pastor Charles Archie.

But, for some reason, the crook didn't steal anything, something the pastor believes was an act of God.

"Why they didn't take the units, I believe God intervened, I don't know if they touched his heart, or something happened," said Archie.

Archie said if the AC units had been stolen, his church may have had to shut down, because it would have cost more than $11,000 to replace them - money the church simply doesn't have.

"The Bible says in everything, give thanks, so we just thank God that we don't have to replace the units totally," said Archie.

While it's a setback for the church, the pastor is hoping the AC units can be repaired soon, and the church can go back to its community ministries.

And, the pastor is hoping the community can turn in the crook, and whoever his accomplice in the getaway SUV may have been.

"They are someone son, they are someone's brother, they are someone's neighbor, so we are just asking the community get involved and let's get this person off the streets before they damage someone else's property," said Archie.

If you know anything about this crime, call Prichard Police immediately at 251-452-2211.
