City Council expects to vote on USA stadium funding on July 31

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Two important dates to key in mind when it comes to the future of a new stadium for the University of South Alabama, and the future of Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

On Monday, July 23rd, there will be a public hearing on Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Then, the next week, July 31st, the Mobile City Council says it will vote on that plan for the city to provide $10 million to build the new stadium for South.

But plenty of people are still weighing on what they think about the plans.

Several people signed up to speak today either to speak on the future of Ladd-Peebles Stadium, or the proposal for the city to give $10 million to South Alabama to build a new stadium.

One person told the council, "In 20 years, we will be passing a debt along to our grandchildren and great-grandchildren."

Reverend Joseph Rembert said Ladd, as it exists now, benefits people in the neighborhood.

Rembert said, "Citizens who let citizens park cars in their yard, those who work concessions and provide security, city workers who work early for little pay and benefits are God's children also."

Cedric Myles suggested South try to fund the stadium with municipal bonds or money from a corporate sponsor.

Myles said, "I think that there should be some corporations in both the city and the county that owe a debt to South, because many of those corporations are thriving now because of South Alabama graduates.

Ann Davis, the chairperson of the Ladd-Peebles Stadium Board of Directors, also addressed the council.

She said, "If it is found in the next couple of years that Ladd does need to be demolished and re-purposed, so be it.   I just want Ladd to have a fair chance, and I'd also like for us to be given the opportunity to look form other funds if need be."

South Alabama officials again emphasized they have no proposal on what to do with Ladd.

Nick Lawkis in Governmental Relations at South Alabama said, "We are not in a position on what should happen there.  That's not our decision to make. That's yours."

In addition to the public hearing on Ladd, Council Member Gina Gregory said she's planning a public hearing this month for Hillsdale residents so they can ask questions about how the new stadium will affect them.
