MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Mobile Police have a strong warning about gunfire in neighborhoods along Dauphin Island Parkway. We're told calls have been flooding in lately about people shooting guns into the air near there, and other places in MPD's First Precinct.

It understandably has neighbors on edge, which is why the woman we talked to, didn't want to show her face. But she did tell us what's it like to have bullets fly outside her window almost every night.

"You feel like it's in your yard or in your backyard, but you don't know where it's coming from, you don't see anybody. They just drive by, and you can hear it."

It's the norm now for folks in her neighborhood off DIP.  Other neighbors told us people come to the park at the end of the street and shoot their guns, but they're never caught. Not too long ago, a bullet hit a woman's home.

Neighbors have had enough, and so have Mobile Police. We're told officers have responded to a lot of calls of shots fired in the air recently, mostly in the First Precinct area, between Government Street, I-65, and the Mobile River.

Now, MPD is sending out a warning to the whole city, calling on folks to contact police whenever they hear gunfire. It also comes with a warning to the shooters: the consequences are severe.

That's exactly the message neighbors want to send too, so they can get back to feeling safe outside their homes again.

"It's very scary, because you don't know if you're gonna get hit."

Here is part of the statement from MPD: "Police respond to every complaint and every complaint is investigated. The person found responsible for shooting a gun into the sky will be arrested. If people are injured or property damaged, the person could face felony charges...Remember, what goes up, must come down. Protect human life and others’ property. Don’t shoot your gun into the air."

Those who see someone recklessly firing a gun into the air should call MPD at 251-208-7211. Be sure to provide an accurate description of the person. You can remain anonymous.
