Suspect in parking garage attack granted bond

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

The man accused of attacking a woman in downtown Mobile last month was granted bond Wednesday, July 11.

Douglas Dunson, 43, is charged with attempted rape and assault of a woman Tuesday, June 5, at the RSA Tower parking garage.

Dunson was in court Wednesday for a preliminary court hearing when judge Bob Sherling said the suspect has a right to bond. Sherling set bond at $15,000 on the assault second charge and $25,000 on the attempted rape charge.

"I respectfully disagree with the judge's opinion about him being entitled to a bond after such an extensive criminal history and being out on bond when this occurred. I think we just have a different interpretation of how the case law is, but he's the judge and that's his call. Now that he set the bond, I'm happy that there's a cash component. I don't think Mr. Dunson can make that," Assistant District Attorney Tandice Hogan said.

The case will now be sent to a grand jury.

According to testimony by a detective from the adult sex crimes unit, the victim parked her car and was approached by Dunson who was asking for money.  The detective said the victim declined and walked away and during that time the suspect struck her with a 2x2 board and dragged her between two cars.

The detective said the victim struggled as Dunson continued to hit her until she was almost unconscious and he attempted to undress and, "penetrate her." He went on to say that the suspect then tried to kiss the victim and bite her on the shoulder. The detective said another man in the parking garage helped the victim get away after she screamed for help. At that time they say Dunson fled on foot and a witness followed him while the victim gathered her things and ran into the RSA building.

Officials say the victim suffered a broken wrist, several broken ribs, deep lacerations to the scalp and bruises on her body.

Authorities say when they picked Dunson up, he was wearing the same clothes he was wearing during the alleged attack.
