Police map out accident scene where woman and unborn child were killed

Posted: Updated:

Foley Police continue to investigate the accident in which a pregnant woman was killed Sunday night, August 5, 2018.  It happened on the Foley Beach Express.  Josie Jones of Orange Beach was killed when police said another vehicle struck the one she was a passenger in, head-on.  Police said Debra Estep of Elberta was driving the wrong way on the expressway when it happened.

Investigators continue to put the pieces together, but as of Wednesday no charges had been filed against Debra Estep.  Investigators have said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but until toxicology results become available they won’t know for sure.

Wednesday, specially trained police officers from Foley, Daphne and Orange Beach were back at the scene of the accident, mapping out the crash site.  It’s another piece of the evidence investigators need to determine what led up to the accident.  Witnesses told investigators Sunday night that Estep was traveling Westbound on County Road 20 when she turned southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic.  Investigators said Estep drove about a quarter mile the wrong way before she hit the vehicle Jones was riding in.  Jones’s boyfriend, Alize Marshasll was driving the car and talked to Fox 10 News about the crash

"When we hit the car, she was unresponsive, and she grabbed my hand, and she wouldn't stop squeezing it, she couldn't stop squeezing it,” Marshall recalled.  “And I kept saying baby it's going to be alright, baby, it's going to be alright."

Police have interviewed Estep and witnesses to the crash and are now waiting on critical information to be released from Florida.  Estep and Jones were both flown to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola after the crash.  Investigators said Wednesday that they are working through some roadblocks getting some of the medical records released out of Florida and said it may take several weeks before they have that evidence.

Foley Police said they aren’t commenting any more on this case as long as the investigation is ongoing.  Josie Jones was 29 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.  Her family is in the process of making funeral arrangements.
