More consistent weather has arrived for the week and temperatures are finally starting to cool. Fall fishing is starting to improve. Water conditions in the upper Mobile Bay are better now that the Barry Steam Plant level is at a more modest 6 feet. Most of the good inshore saltwater species like trout, reds, and flounder are coming from areas south of I-10.
The trout are looking for deeper water in Mobile River, Pinto Pass, Arlington Channel, and the Tensaw in front of the Battleship. A few fish are coming from the mouth of the Blakely as well. Trout are making the natural progression to the deeper areas, but still also will be hanging on the lower ends of the Tensaw, Apalachee and Blakely Bars, where they have been thick for about the past month.
Redfish are more scattered and can be found north of the interstate. Redfish are more freshwater tolerant, as are flounder. The flush of fresh water has relocated the shrimp in the upper bay, so this is where you will find the greatest concentration of fish.
Fowl River and Dog River are producing fish, along with Magnolia and Fish Rivers on the east side. Trout and reds usually make a run up these rivers and the fishing really gets good around Thanksgiving.
Captain Bobby Abrusacto has been busy this week pre-fishing for the upcoming 2009 Championship IFA redfish tournament out of Orange Beach. He is catching reds, but not revealing any secrets before the tournament. He did mention that he caught some monster white trout on Berkley Gulp on the rigs in the lower Bay. He said some were 17” and pulled drag!
Flounder and whiting are showing up along the beaches. These north wind days are great days to surf fish with fresh dead shrimp. The beaches are peaceful in November, and the fishing is good before it gets too cold.
