SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WALA) - Thanksgiving is always a busy time of year for food banks, but for Prodisee Pantry, this November will see a bit more traffic than usual.
“Well we expect our families to lose about $36 per household on the reduction of the SNAP benefits, and we are preparing for an increase in families coming in because $40 can make a huge difference in a family's grocery bill,” Executive Director Deann Servos said.
According to the Department of Human Resources, more than 9,000 families in Baldwin County will be impacted by the reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which are set to go into effect tomorrow.
“"Everyone received an increase in their benefits of 13.6 percent, but of course their benefits are not decreasing by that amount,” Carolyn Wilson, DHR program supervisor, said. “It's only decreasing by 5.5 because of the cost of living increases.”
The department said within a week or so people throughout the state will get notification of their specific change by mail. Prodisee Pantry knows the change will mean more hungry families during the holiday season.
"We always see a little increase and a swell over the holidays, but usually in January and February that decreases a little bit. But this year, we're thinking that January and February will continue at a thousand to 1100 family visits."
And they are preparing for that influx one box at a time. The pantry will start distributing their Thanksgiving boxes Tuesday, November 5. For more information on the SNAP changes, visit the USDA website as well as the Department of Human Resources website.
