MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile County Sheriff's deputies were called to a work site off Gaynor Road and Cheyenne Parkway after a deadly accident that happened around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 8.
Crews were clearing trees from land owned by Alabama Power Company when the backhoe one worker was on flipped on top of him and killed him.
"In clearing the land he was knocking some trees down. Apparently the backhoe got too close to the embankment and fell approximately 20 feet, and tumbled down, and it crushed the gentleman that was performing the work," Sgt. Joe Mahoney said.
There were other workers in the area, but they were not able to save the man.
"Any time there is an unnatural death we go out and make sure that it was an accident," Mahoney said.
The sheriff's office identified the victim at 41-year-old Samuel Lowe from Alabaster, Ala. Lowe was a temporary worker for the sub-contracting company Con-Site Services.
