MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile Mayor-elect Sandy Stimpson announced Friday, October 25 Deputy Chief Jim Barber will be appointed as police chief and Deputy Chief Randy Smith will be appointed as fire chief.
The next step is for the Mobile city council to approve Stimpson's appointees. There will also be a national search for a director of public safety.
Mobile Police Chief Micheal T. Williams announced his retirement on Wednesday, August 28. Williams was named police chief in 2010, after more than 20 years serving the Mobile Police Department. Williams took over the top spot, at the police department, after Philip Garrett retired.
"I'm in the drop program and was planning to leave anyway before the election. This just affords me to do it earlier and get out of the way for the new administration," Williams said.
Then on Wednesday, October 23, FOX10 learned Mobile Fire-Rescue Chief Steve Dean plans to retire effective Saturday, November 2.
Dean has been with the department for nearly 40 years. He was appointed fire chief in 1999. As fire chief, Dean is responsible for “fire service” for Alabama’s second largest city, millions of dollars of equipment and nearly 600 personnel.
