MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile Fire Rescue set fire to a home in the 1000 block of Rotterdam Street, Monday night October 14, 2013.
The wood house was donated by the owners to MFR for a training exercise.
"We ask anybody that has a house that they want to get rid of -- as long as we can use it for training purposes, we'll burn it for them," said R. Steve Huffman, spokesperson for Mobile Fire Rescue.
Firefighters started the blaze in the back of the house using a flare. They lit a stack of pallets and piles of straw and in minutes flames crawled up walls and shot through windows.
"This is as close to the real thing without losing control," said Huffman.
Firefighters made some strategic cuts to the homes roof beforehand which allowed them to control the fire; it burned hot and bright in the rear of the home with the mid and front section mostly unscathed.
"It's good hands on training for firefighters, fortunately we don't make a lot of fires so this is a good opportunity for them to keep up on their basic skills," said Huffman.
