MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Neighbors are trying to understand the frightening incident that happened here in the 1900 block of MLK Drive early this morning.
Police say 17-year-old Benjamin Cowan attacked his mother and brother with a large kitchen knife. According to police both victims were asleep when Cowan woke them up.
“What we found out is that our suspect, who is a juvenile actually woke up his victims and altercation occurred and during that altercation he actually cut them with a knife and struck a female with a candle holder.,” Corporal Christopher Levy said.
Cowan’s older brother was finally able to end the attack by shooting Cowan in the arm. Even though the 17- year-old is a minor, he’s being charged as an adult.
“If you’re more than 16-years-old and it’s a violent felony you can be charged as an adult,” Levy said.
None of the injuries were considered life threatening. Cowan was treated and released from the hospital. He remains in Metro Jail charged with domestic violence.
Police said there were two small children in the house, a one-year-old and a two-year-old. They were not harmed.
Police did not give a motive for the attack.
The trial for Giuseppe Pino LoPorto continues today in Baldwin County. LoPorto, now 80-years-old, faces several sex abuse charges against a child dating back to the early 90s.
