MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Relatives of a murdered Mobile man spotted his missing car, and called police.That's when police said a chase ensued, ending in a officer-involved shooting that killed the suspect.
On Thursday, September 5, Erica House said she would have been celebrating her three year anniversary with her husband, Gary, in a little more than a week.
Instead, she is preparing to bury the father of four and Army soldier after his body was discovered Tuesday, September 2 near Halls Mill and Azalea roads.
The 45-year-old was found near a creek. Mobile Police said they also found his fishing equipment and believe he had been hit over the head with a blunt object.
Erica House told FOX10 her husband’s white Acura was also stolen from the scene.
On Thursday, however, she said a relative spotted the stolen vehicle in Prichard.
“My brother called me, and he asked me to describe the car and I described it to him,” said House. “He said, ‘I think I’m behind the car.’ I was like, 'Please dial 911. They may have a gun, anything.'”
Prichard Police responded and gave chase.
Mobile Police said they got involved when the chase crossed into their jurisdiction.
The chase ended at Montlimar Apartments when police said the driver, identified as Kenneth Bedgood, got out of the vehicle and opened fire on them.
Bedgood was shot by officers and pronounced dead on the scene.
“I was inside today, and I heard a bunch of gunshots and police sirens and I came outside and there was about 20 gunshots,” said one man who witnessed the incident.
Erica House said she went to identify the car and insists that it belongs to her late husband.
Police are not sure if the driver is connected to House’s murder just yet.
Authorities, however, confirmed they are investigating any links between the two cases.
Visitation for House will be held Saturday, September 7 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at the Lighthouse Apostolic Holiness Temple in Grand Bay.
