One dead after a Baldwin County deputy-involved shooting in Elsanor
UPDATE: The Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit has released details on the shooting today involving a Baldwin County deputy.
Officials said the sheriff’s office responded to a residence on Highway 90 in Robertsdale regarding a vandalism call after a complainant said a neighbor had damaged personal property.
Deputies said they attempted to speak to the suspect, but he became uncooperative and went into his so home.
The deputies left the residence but remained in the area due to this being an ongoing issue with the suspect, according to police.
The suspect also had active warrants for stalking, trespassing and criminal mischief.
Deputies said they approached the suspect and attempted to arrest him after seeing him exit his house at approximately 2:40 p.m. and walk around his property.
That’s when the suspect pulled out a knife and charged at the deputy, according to officials.
“At one point a deputy was conducting surveillance – they were trying to take him into custody and actually saw him exit his house and go into the neighbor’s yard. He went over there to try and stop that from happening and gave some commands from keep him from going towards the neighbor… there was an altercation there,” explained Sgt. Jason Vannoy, with the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit. “A taser was deployed – we’re not sure at this point if the connection was made and that’s still under investigation. The taser did not work. The man actually picked up a frying pan in the yard and threw it at the deputy. Didn’t hit the deputy and after that came at the deputy with a knife.”
At that point the deputy used deadly force -- resulting in the deputy shooting the suspect, according to the sheriff’s office. It’s still unclear how many shots were fired.
Police said medical aid was administered on the scene, but was unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
The deputy was not injured and the Major Crimes Unit is still investigating.
We’re also told the nearby Elsanor School was placed on lockdown. Sgt. Vannoy also says authorities were very familiar with the suspect.
“There was an extensive call history to his residence. There were several calls over the last several months to this residence for disturbance related issues,” said Sgt. Vannoy.
There was no one else at the suspect’s home at the time of the shooting. Because it’s a deputy-involved shooting the Baldwin Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation and will present its findings to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office.
