MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Alabama Department of Environmental Management held a ribbon cutting Thursday for its new field office in Mobile.

The 15,000-square-foot facility will bring about 30 ADEM staff members — who currently work in two buildings — under one roof.

Work on the new office on South Broad Street near Duval Street started in April 2022.

ADEM’s director said having all the employees in one location will better serve people in our area as well as protect the environment.

“This new facility is the result of 13 years of collaboration by a number of parties who united behind the mission of protecting Alabama’s coastal areas,” ADEM Director Lance LeFleur said. “It really was an earnest team effort, and we are grateful that many of our partners could be with us today in celebrating this important milestone.”

The project $13 million office is the result of the partnership between ADEM and the Alabama Gulf Coast Recovery Council and is mostly funded by settlement money from the 2010 BP oil spill.
