MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The first 9-1-1 call in the United States was placed on February 16, 1968, in Haleyville, Alabama. This marked the beginning of the 9-1-1 emergency dispatch system, which is now widely used across the country for reporting emergencies and requesting assistance from police, fire, and medical services. On the other end of these 9-1-1 calls are public safety telecommunicators who exhibit extraordinary dedication to saving lives and ensuring public safety. This week is Telecommunications Week. We spoke with Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch to gather more information about the work dispatchers do.
