Local photographer capturing smiles in downtown Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - From the free flowing fountain to the visitors galore -- there’s never a dull moment in Bienville Square.

“It’s just a place where a lot of people come and enjoy the scenery,” said Howard Edwards.

It’s where you’ll find Mobile native Howard Edwards most afternoons taking pictures of people he meets -- asking them to “smile for the camera.”

He does it for free and posts them to social media. He’s one of the main contributors to the “A Day in the Life of Mobile” Facebook page.

Howard retired in 2001 and says he did not pick up photography until 2010. Since then -- it’s a retirement hobby that’s turned into a full-time labor of love.

His casual approach leads to candid shots. Over the years he’s developed quite an eye and takes more than 100 pictures a day.

“You just don’t take pictures... It’s an art. You have to really study this. And I’m steady learning every day. I see my mistakes and I try not to make them -- but you do. That’s why I take two or three pictures of a person -- so I make sure I have it right. I have at least one good picture -- if I don’t have three good pictures -- I have at least one,” said Howard.

He’ll even do a redo -- if requested. Making his way through the square -- he’s an artist at work -- always looking for that next great shot!

“I did my job for today I think -- and we’ll start again tomorrow. Start all over again tomorrow,” said Howard.
