VIDEO: Bodycam, dashcam shows pursuit and capture of Orleans fugitives in Texas
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (WVUE) - Police in Huntsville, Texas, have released body and dash camera video showing the high-speed pursuit and arrest of two of the ten men who escaped the Orleans Justice Center earlier this month.
The arrest of Leo Tate, 31, and Jermaine Donald, 42, took place Monday (May 26) on Memorial Day, as the multi-agency manhunt now stretches into its second week.
In the footage released by Huntsville Police Department, officers are seen with guns drawn, shouting commands as they surround an SUV. One officer pulls one suspect out through the rear window, while others instruct a second man to crawl to the passenger side before taking him into custody.
Police say the pair led multiple agencies on a high-speed chase through the Huntsville area before an officer used a tactical vehicle maneuver to stop the SUV. Tate and Donald were booked into the Walker County Jail, where they are being held without bond. Both face extradition to Louisiana.
“A lot of police officers were there and it is not a very easy spot to run on foot from,” said Lt. Wade Roberts of the Huntsville Police Department. “You’re talking about a very heavily wooded area right there, not a lot of places to go. I can only assume that they looked at their situation and thought, it is time to give it up.”
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said Wednesday, “We’re following the ordinary extradition procedures to have them brought back. I have full confidence that Texas will comply.”
Tate and Donald are two of ten inmates who escaped the Orleans Justice Center shortly after midnight on May 16. The inmates reportedly ripped a toilet from a wall, crawled through a hole in the wall, and ran across I-10 to flee the facility.
Their arrest comes just hours after a third escapee, Lenton VanBuren Jr., was captured in Baton Rouge outside a department store on Hammond Avenue. Baton Rouge police say they acted on an anonymous tip.
“It was just quite interesting. You’d think that you were able to escape from a parish jail and you’d try to hide yourself,” said Baton Rouge Police Lt. L’Jean McKneely. “He tried to change his appearance and had his hair done a different way. I guess he felt like no one would recognize him here in Baton Rouge. Fortunately, someone did.”
The remaining fugitives still at large are Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey, both considered armed and dangerous.

The arrests of Tate and Donald were the result of a coordinated effort involving Texas DPS, Huntsville Police, Louisiana State Police, and other federal and state agencies. Governor Jeff Landry praised the arrests, saying, “Antoine and Derrick — you are NEXT.”
Since the jailbreak, twelve people have been arrested on charges related to aiding the escapees, including family members, girlfriends, and jail employees. Over the weekend, several relatives of VanBuren were booked on accessory charges after helping transport him to a relative’s home in Mississippi.

Investigators say the escape involved not just a physical breach of the jail, but a coordinated plan that included accomplices providing transportation, phones, shelter, and food.
A $20,000 reward is still being offered for information leading to the capture of either of the two remaining fugitives. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111, or through the FBI tip line at fbi.gov/neworleansfugitives.
