MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Claudia Nichols speaks to a family member of a Mobile couple who is missing in the Texas floods.
The couple was visiting their family at a campground in Kerrville when their cabin was swept away.
There was no time to call for help.
The couple’s daughter-in-law said she was enjoying her holiday with her husband when they received the devastating news.
“We were at a river on the Fourth of July in the middle of our day and we got a call from his sergeant and they contacted us through Facebook because my husband is the only one left to contact,” said Jaimee Santana. “And we got on a plane and we were here within 24 hours.”
Jaimee Santana said her brother-in-law Eddie Santana Jr was staying at the campground with his wife Camille, five-year-old daughter Mila Rose and his parents Ileana and Eddie Santana Sr who were visiting from Mobile.
The Santana family was staying at the HTR TX Hill Country Campground, right next to the Guadalupe River.
In just 45 minutes, the river rose 26 feet and the Santanas didn’t have time to evacuate.
Jaimee said her brother-in-law Eddie woke up to screaming outside their cabin on July 4th and couldn’t believe what he saw when he opened the front door.
“The water was already to the door, by that time he turned around and kind of was frantic to try to get everybody up and everybody was awake and he tried to go get dressed to put clothes on and he put a shirt on and by the time he got to the front door the water had already risen,” she said.
She said within minutes the water swept away the cabin and the whole family was still inside.
Jaime said Eddie was able to escape and it was nothing short of a miracle.
“He got hit with a door that popped off from somewhere, he says and got sucked out from the roof and he battled to the top of the water and watched the cabin float,” she said. “He was being hit and twisted and turned and drowned.”
Jaimee said Eddie grabbed onto a tree, climbed to safety and clung there for three hours before he was rescued.
“He finally seen rescue and they went past him first,” said Jaimee. “And then they came back to him and he said the guy looked up at the tree and told him ‘if you want to live you have to jump’. And he jumped.”
She said Eddie was taken to the hospital and had a gash in his head, some bruises and a laceration on his side.
And when he woke up in the hospital, his family wasn’t there.
Eddie’s wife, daughter and his parents are still missing.
Jaimee is in Texas now and said crews continue searching the area where they were staying.
She said her family is desperate for answers and they’re still holding on to hope.
“The power of prayer has been powerful,” said Jaimee. “We can feel it from every corner of everywhere that anyone has reached out.”
A fundraiser has been created to help support them during this tragic time.
