MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Most people know that drinking and driving or texting and driving are dangerous—but what about driving while simply too tired? Studies show drowsy driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving, and it causes thousands of crashes every year. Joining us today is David Greene from Greene & Phillips Injury Lawyers to talk about the risks of drowsy driving.

David, why is drowsy driving so dangerous? When you’re tired, your reaction times slow down, your judgment is impaired, and in some cases, drivers can even “micro-sleep” without realizing it. That means they can travel the length of a football field without being fully awake. It’s incredibly risky for both the driver and everyone else on the road.

Are there certain times or groups of people more at risk for drowsy driving?Yes. Shift workers, long-haul drivers, college students, and new parents are especially vulnerable. Late-night and early-morning hours are also more dangerous, since our bodies are naturally more fatigued then. And this time of year, with football season underway, many people are driving home late at night after games- when drowsy driving crashes are especially common.

What should drivers do if they feel themselves getting drowsy behind the wheel? The best thing to do is pull over and rest. Don’t rely on quick fixes like turning up the radio or rolling down the window, they don’t work. If you’re on a long trip, switch drivers if possible, or take a short nap in a safe location before continuing.

If someone is injured in a crash caused by a drowsy driver, what should they do?Call 911, get medical attention, and document the accident scene. Then, contact a local personal injury attorney, like the lawyers at Greene & Phillips. Drowsy driving accidents can be difficult to prove, but an experienced attorney can investigate and help make sure you’re compensated for your injuries.
