South drops falls to Louisiana 31-22 on homecoming
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The South Alabama Jaguars took on the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns in their annual homecoming game with both teams needing a win to keep their postseason hopes alive.
Louisiana took advantage of a slow start by South’s offense to jump out to an early 10-0 lead. South was able to counter with a 16-play drive that was capped off by a 15-yard touchdown run by Keenan Phillips. But the Jags’s offense stalled for the rest of the half. The defense also allowed 18 first downs in the half and two touchdowns in the second quarter to make it a 24-7 lead for Louisiana at halftime.
After another touchdown by the Ragin Cajuns to start the second half, the Jags started to rally thanks to the same kind of fight they’ve shown all season long. Bishop Davenport scored on a 5-yard run in the third and connected with Jeremy Scott for a 64-yard score in the 4th quarter to pull within nine.
But the Jags couldn’t get points on their last two drives as Louisiana wins 31-22 over South Alabama. Davenport finished the game with 245 total yards with two total touchdowns and an interception. Jeremy Scott led the Jags in receiving with 6 catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.
South Alabama now falls to 2-7 on the year meaning they have been eliminated from bowl eligibility. They will have next Saturday off before hitting the road to take on Louisiana-Monroe on November 15th.
