South Alabama baseball erupts for 16 runs to clinch series over ULM
Jaguars score 16 runs for third time this season in Sun Belt Conference home opener at Stanky Field
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The South Alabama Jaguars baseball team put up 16 runs for the third time this season in a win over the ULM Warhawks to secure the series at Stanky Field.
After splitting the first two games, the Jaguars looked to close out their Sun Belt Conference home opener on a high note.
Early deficit erased quickly
ULM jumped out early with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Jaguars didn’t let their momentum slip.
South Alabama erupted for six runs in the bottom half. Duncan Mathews plated Brennon Wright, before Rett Johnson delivered a clutch two-out, bases-loaded single for two RBI. Ethan Melton ripped a two-RBI double to cap the inning.
The Jaguars stayed hot in the second. After ULM added a run, Blake Guerin launched a three-run homer to left.
Offense continues to roll
South Alabama never let up. In the third inning, a sacrifice fly from Mathews, a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, and an RBI single from Robert Miranda stretched the lead to 12–3.
The offensive surge continued in the fifth. Miranda picked up his second RBI of the day with a double, and Nathan Wood blasted his first home run of the season.
By the final out, the Jaguars had rolled to a 16–4 win to clinch the series. Head Coach Mark Calvi said he was pleased with the team’s energy following yesterday’s loss, adding that their mindset played a key role in the big win.
The Jaguars will head to Montgomery to face No. 5 Auburn on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
