MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - America’s 250th birthday is three months away, and a state commission has been working to ensure every Alabamian has the opportunity to celebrate the milestone.

Alabama’s USA Semiquincentennial Commission has been traveling the state for three years, working with communities to plan exhibits and events to educate, engage and unite Alabamians.

“Everybody is getting really excited, and to get out into the communities and see events starting to take shape has been an amazing opportunity,” said Natalie Steed, executive officer of Alabama’s USA Semiquincentennial Commission.

Events like the recent re-enactment of the Battle of Fort Charlotte at Fort Conde are among many promoted by the commission.

“This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but also that local Alabama history that helped shape our nation,” Steed said.

Through the commission’s website, America250AL.org, organizers are honoring veterans and allowing everyone to share what America means to them.

The website includes a map where users can click on a county to find events throughout the state leading up to July 4.
