NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Pelicans have been taking their time this offseason with naming their next head coach, but now the search has come to an end.

The Pelicans are hiring former Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley as their next head coach. The deal is for five years, according to ESPN.

“Jamahl has earned tremendous respect across the NBA for his leadership, professionalism, and the strong relationships he develops with players and staff,” said Dumars. “He has consistently demonstrated an ability to develop young talent while establishing teams that compete with toughness, discipline, and togetherness.”

Mosley was most recently let go by the Magic earlier this month after the team failed to advance past the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs for the third straight season.

In the current postseason, the Magic allowed the Pistons to come back from being down 3-1 in a best-of-seven game series.

In the past three seasons, the Magic compiled a regular-season record of 133-113.

“At least we got someone with a little more experience,” said Gerard Steib, a Pelicans fan. “Orlando was pretty bad for a long time. I’m hoping he comes to New Orleans, second turn around as a head coach. A better experience, a little more experience.”

Jerry Collins said, “Very excited! I think they’ve made a good choice. He’s a pretty good coach, and he’s a…he knows how to talk to his players.”

Pam Randazza, owner of the Black and Gold shop in Metairie, said anytime a shake-up happens, business ticks up. The hot items include t-shirts and polos.

“Lane Kiffin comes in, we’ve been spiking. When Kellen Moore came in, we’ve been spiking. When we got a new quarter back, we spiked. It only helps business, you know, and then it depends right before tip-off what you have,” Randazza said.

Mosley’s overall record as a head coach is 189-221. New Orleans is his second stop as an NBA head coach.
