Greene & Phillips: Summer Boating Safety
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - As the weather warms up, more families are heading out on boats, jet skis, and enjoying time on the water. But with the increase in boating activity also comes an increase in accidents and injuries. David Greene from Greene & Phillips Injury Lawyers joined us to talk about boating safety and what people should know before heading out this summer.
The following questions/answers were provided by Greene & Phillips:
We tend to think of boating as relaxing and fun, but boating accidents can actually be very serious, right?
Absolutely. Every summer we see accidents involving boats and personal watercraft that lead to serious injuries and sometimes even fatalities. People often let their guard down on the water, but boating requires the same level of responsibility and attention as driving a car.
What are some of the biggest mistakes you see people make?
One of the biggest issues is alcohol. A lot of people don’t realize boating under the influence is just as dangerous as drunk driving. We also see accidents caused by speeding, inexperienced operators, distracted boating, and people not paying attention to weather or water conditions.
Life jackets are still incredibly important, right?
They really are. Life jackets save lives, and unfortunately, many drowning victims weren’t wearing one when the accident occurred. Children especially should always have properly fitted life jackets on while the boat is moving.
What kinds of injuries are common in boating accidents?
We see everything from broken bones and head injuries to spinal cord injuries and drowning cases. Unlike a car accident where emergency help may arrive quickly, being out on the water can delay medical attention, which makes injuries even more dangerous.
What should someone do if they’re injured in a boating accident caused by another person’s negligence?
First, seek medical treatment immediately. Then try to document as much as possible- photos of the boats involved, witness information, and any available accident reports. Boating cases can involve complicated insurance and liability issues, so it’s important to speak with an attorney early.
What’s the biggest thing you want people to remember before heading out on the water this summer?
Have fun, but be responsible. Pay attention, wear life jackets, never operate a boat impaired, and treat boating safety seriously. A careless decision on the water can change lives very quickly.
