What are convective thunderstorms?

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Convective, or “pop-up,” thunderstorms form when three key ingredients come together: heat, moisture, and instability. During the day, the sun heats the ground, causing warm, humid air to rise. As that air rises, it cools and condenses into clouds. The release of heat during condensation helps the cloud grow rapidly, allowing a small cumulus cloud to become a towering thunderstorm in as little as 20 to 30 minutes.

These storms are often very localized, developing along the sea breeze, outflow boundaries, or areas of uneven heating. That’s why one neighborhood may experience a heavy downpour while another just a few miles away stays dry.

Although typically short-lived, convective thunderstorms can produce frequent lightning, torrential rainfall, gusty winds, small hail, and localized flooding. If you hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning—when thunder roars, go indoors.

The next time a storm seems to pop up out of nowhere, you’ll know it’s simply the atmosphere doing what it does best: using heat, moisture, and instability to build a thunderstorm through convection.
