Fairhope looks into establishing city-run school system
Feasibility study finds break from Baldwin County schools could be financially possible
FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WALA) - A new feasibility study has found it could be financially possible for Fairhope to establish its own city-run school system, separate from the Baldwin County Public School System.
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have already broken away from Baldwin County schools. City officials said many Fairhope residents want more local control over education and better athletic facilities, though officials said they are satisfied with the city’s current schools.
Financial and governance questions remain
City leaders acknowledged that forming a city school system would come with significant financial and governance responsibilities and could impact taxpayers and city services.
Rather than moving forward at this time, officials said they are seeking public input before making any decisions.
Residents can weigh in
Residents will be able to fill out a survey, and a series of public meetings will be held for residents to learn more and share feedback. Information will be available on the City of Fairhope’s website.
