Deputy fired for using Flock cameras to track ex-fiancée’s vehicle for several years, sheriff says
GRETNA, La. (WVUE/Gray News) - A Jefferson Parish deputy has been fired after the authorities say he misused their Flock camera system.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto said Nathan Rome admitted to using the agency’s Flock cameras while working as a deputy to track the movements of his former fiancée’s vehicle over several years.
“Upon the completion of the potential criminal portion of this investigation, Sheriff Lopinto terminated the employee,” an agency spokesman said in a statement.
Rome’s ex-fiancée shared in an interview that she was not aware of the unauthorized surveillance but did not consider herself a victim.
The woman did not want to file a criminal complaint and asked that Rome not lose his job, the agency said in a statement.
However, Lopinto said the violation of Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office policy was indeed a fireable offense.
Flock camera systems collect license plate data that can be used to track movements of a vehicle along interstates and roadways.
As they have expanded into neighborhoods, sharing home surveillance images of vehicles and people, the systems have become more controversial as a method of surveillance.
