NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The New Orleans Pelicans have officially welcomed free agent guard Bennedict Mathurin to the team.

The Pelicans made the official announcement on Instagram on Sept. 11 following reports by ESPN insider Shams Charania on Aug. 26.

According to Charania, Mathurin has agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal, including a player option.

Mathurin’s reps approached the Clippers about withdrawing his $8.8 million qualifying offer, making the qualifying offer a more favorable situation in New Orleans with added security, Charania said.

The Pelicans have aggressively pursued Mathurin for more than a year, Charania added.

“We are thrilled to welcome Bennedict to New Orleans,” said Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars. “He embodies the toughness and competitiveness we want our team to play with every night, and his mental and physical approach aligns with the culture we are building.”
