Saints snap three-game losing streak with 34-27 victory over New York Giants
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (WVUE) - The Saints’ losing streak is over.
After dropping three in a row during their recent homestand, drawing the public ire of owner Gayle Benson, the Saints found inspiration on the road Sunday (Oct. 18) after another slow start. They rallied from an early 10-point deficit to knock off the NFC East-leading New York Giants, 34-27, at MetLife Stadium.
The Saints (2-4) boarded a plane bound for France immediately after the game. They face the Pittsburgh Steelers next Sunday (8:30 a.m. CT) at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, just north of Paris, for the first NFL game in that country.
The Giants scored the first 10 points of the game. The Saints responded with 34 unanswered points. Then the Giants scored 17 points in the final seven minutes of the game before being stopped on fourth down while at the Saints’ 12-yard line, as backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s pass glanced off the fingertips of tight end Isaiah Likely in the end zone.
Saints quarterback Tyler Shough threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, after it was reported before the game that he has played with two broken bones in his left (non-throwing hand) since being injured Oct. 5 against Atlanta.
Shough’s final touchdown pass of the game went to Chris Olave for an 18-yard touchdown with 11:31 to play.
Saints running back Alvin Kamara joined exclusive company in the third quarter.
His 31-yard touchdown reception gave him 5,000 yards receiving and 5,000 yards rushing in his career. Kamara is the sixth player to achieve that feat, with San Francisco’s Christian McCaffrey being the only other active member of the exclusive club. Kamara’s historic touchdown gave the Saints their first lead of the game, 17-10.
New Orleans tied the game in the first half with one second left. Shough hit rookie Bryce Lance for a 2-yard touchdown, tying the contest, 10-10.
Former Saints quarterback Jameis Winston connected with Tyrone Tracy Jr. for a 12-yard score to give the Giants their only touchdown in the first half.
In the second half, Winston threw two interceptions. Martin Emerson, Jr. and Julian Blackmon picked off Winston. He was benched in the fourth quarter in favor of McCarthy.
The Saints forced four turnovers in the game, while losing the ball only once. The Giants outgained the Saints, 461 yards to 319.
