Fairhope considers allowing adult drinks on streets at special events

Children crowd the streets in downtown Fairhope prior to the city's annual Christmas parade.

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WALA) - The Fairhope City Council will vote Monday whether to establish an entertainment district at special events, which would allow adults to take alcoholic beverages out into the downtown streets.

Council members voted on the ordinance in January 2018 but it was tabled after a 2-2 vote.

FOX10 News questioned three of the five council members at Friday's annual Christmas parade. One plans on voting yes, one plans on voting no and one is undecided. Mayor Karin Wilson is in favor.

"It's not just for economic development and ease for customers to go shop to shop and museum to museum but it also helps the business owners with liability," Wilson said.

If the ordinance passes, Mayor Wilson intends on only allowing 'appropriate' events, like the city's First Friday Art Walks.

The Fairhope City Council will vote on the ordinance Monday at 6 p.m. Public comments, limited to three minutes, are welcome prior to the vote.
