Mardi Gras is a fun time for families, but its an important time for downtown businesses, too.

Those businesses hope to attract plenty of customers.

The Urban Emporium on Dauphin Street is a non-profit retail incubator that was started to help revitalize retail in downtown Mobile.

Mardi Gras is a good time for business.

Katie Lovvorn with the Urban Emporium said, "It's one of our favorite times of the year. It's so fun, everyone is down here: visitors, locals, that's the best part about it. All the locals come and stay downtown and enjoy the hotels, and restaurants and shopping and we really love it."

Fantasy Island Toys is one of the businesses that has space at Urban Emporium and, in addition to toys, is selling specialty items for Mardi Gras.

Ann Preidl with Fantasy Island Toys said, "We've got all kinds of hats, headbands. We've got some necklaces, just about everything that you would need. We even have blinking key chains, I mean, who doesn't want that?"
