Beads for doughnuts program now underway

Did you catch a lot of beads at Mardi Gras? If so, we have an idea on how you can put them to good use.

For two days only, starting Monday, March 18, you can trade all the Mardi Gras beads you collected this carnival season for doughnuts from Krispy Kreme. Each twelve-pound bag of beads donated rewards you with a dozen free glazed doughnuts at the store on Hillcrest Road in Mobile or on South McKenzie Street in Foley.

This is a program that has been going on for more than 20 years. The Mardi Gras beads are given to the students at Augusta Evans School in Mobile, where the students clean and sort them. Then the students, in turn, sell the beads to Mardi Gras Mystic Societies and to the general public. It’s the school’s main fundraiser for the year.

We talked with Augusta Evans Principal Asha Kidd about the program and how it helps the students.

The Beads for Doughnuts exchange runs through Tuesday, March 19. Krispy Kreme will accept the beads from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
