BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The 11-month-old daughter of an Alabama sheriff’s deputy has been shot to death, authorities said.

The shooting happened Tuesday at the family’s residence in an east Birmingham apartment, Al.com reported.

Emergency authorities received calls reporting a domestic disturbance at the apartment, Birmingham police Sgt. Rod Mauldin said.

An officer arrived to find the off-duty female deputy cradling the child and saying that the child was dead, Mauldin said.

The mother and father were taken to the Birmingham police station for questioning. Police are not saying who pulled the trigger, Al.com reported.

“We want to make sure we conduct a very thorough investigation, preserve the evidence and interview those who were here at the home when it took place,” Mauldin said. “We are putting the pieces of the puzzle together.”

In a statement, the sheriff's office said it was “completely saddened by the loss of this precious child."

“At this time, our goal is to provide support to one of our own in dealing with that tremendous loss,” it said.
