DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - A 3-year-old boy drowned in Daphne Wednesday night, according to officials.
A person close to the rescue attempt told FOX10 News Wednesdy night that this happened about a mile and a half from Jubilee Baptist Church. A medevac helicopter, firetruck and ambulance could be seen in the parking lot of Jubilee Baptist Church around 10:30 p.m.
On Thursday morning, the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said that at about 8:30 p.m., deputies responded to Faircloth Place in Daphne. There, they learned the child's father had placed his son in a bathtub and stepped outside to smoke a cigarette.
"He wasn't outside for an extended period of time. It was just for a few moments so unfortunately, when he came back in, what had happened to his son had happened," said Captain Steve Arthur.
According to the Sheriff's Office, once he returned, he discovered the child face down in the tub, unresponsive.
The father immediately began life saving measures along with responding paramedics and other medical personnel. The child was transported and pronounced deceased at Thomas Hospital.
Investigation of this incident is ongoing, the BCSO says.
The child was taken to the Department of Forensics Science in Mobile where an autopsy will be performed, according to officials.
