MOBILE, Ala. -- Several grave monuments were knocked over and damaged at Pine Crest Cemetery on Dauphin Island Parkway late Thursday night when a car crashed through a fence and plowed through the cemetery.

The Mobile Police Department on Friday released the following:

"On Thursday, January 10, 2019 at approximately 11 p.m. police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a silver Volkswagen Bug on Bankhead Street at Dauphin Island Parkway due to the tag on the vehicle being switched. As police approached the vehicle it accelerated. At approximately 11:16 p.m., police were dispatched to a leaving the scene of an accident at Pine Crest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway. Upon arrival, police noticed the listed vehicle had left the roadway traveling through a fence and damaging several grave stones at the cemetery. It appeared the vehicle had overturned and then landed back on its tires. The driver of the vehicle had left the scene of the accident and was seen by witnesses running across Dauphin Island Parkway. The driver was located behind Harts Fried Chicken. Johnathan Leonard, 39, was arrested."

An official at Pine Crest Cemetery told FOX10 News about five monuments were disturbed. Tire tread marks could be seen going across several graves.

The official said the monuments will be repaired.
