Mobile Airport Authority Executive Director Chris Curry confirmed Wednesday that beginning in April, Via Airlines will offer direct flights between Mobile and Birmingham.
According to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport's website, Birmingham has been selected as a focus city by the airline. Via will also offer nonstop service from Birmingham to Austin, Texas; Pittsburgh, Penn. and Raleigh, North Carolina.
“Working together with the business community, we were very strategic in our approach to gain nonstop service to the selected cities,” said Sylvester Lavender, Birmingham Airport Authority’s Interim President and CEO. “From the aerospace industry in Mobile, to the innovative technology scene in Austin and Pittsburgh, and to the inspiring, bold ideas of the research park in Raleigh, we are making it easier for Birmingham to connect with more economic opportunities, strengthening businesses and partnerships with those communities.”
Via Air came to Mobile in May of 2018 offering non-stop flights between Orlando-Sanford and the Port City.
Via officials say the airline will operate 50-seat Embraer ERJ145s, providing passengers with cost-effective, convenient and comfortable travel.
Service will begin in April 2019 however, the new flights are available now for booking at www.flyviaair.com.
