Okaloosa County deputies said a man was caught while he tried to steal an ice cream truck.

The crime occurred just after midnight on Friday, July 27. Investigators said the ice cream truck owner's girlfriend saw 30-year old William Grappy take the vehicle from a home on Angler Avenue.

According to the sheriff's office, the girlfriend followed Grappy and he ditched the ice cream truck behind a gas station on Miracle Strip Parkway and ran away.

Deputies caught Grappy and said he apologized for "being an idiot."

He is charged with burglary, grand theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of marijuana.

The ice cream truck owner told deputies the keys were left inside the unlocked vehicle.
