MOBILE, Ala. -- Aline Jenkins Howard, crowned in 1940 as the first queen of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association, has died at the age of 97.

Howard died peacefully this morning at a local hospital.

From the news release announcing her death:

Her family is so thankful to the many Mobile residents who over this journey surrounded her with gentle care and love.

Aline Jenkins Howard, EdD was a lifelong resident of Mobile and a fierce advocate for the education of children and young adults. To prepare to give her best to her students her academic career took her to Alabama State University, Columbia University, Tuskegee University, University of South Alabama and Fordham University. Mrs. Howard’s words of encouragement and wisdom will live in the hearts of her family, friends and students.

She was Queen to King Elexis I, Alex Herman the first African American monarch of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association.

She served to educate Mobile area students as principal of Cottage Hill School and assistant principal at Blount High School prior to assuming the principalship at Council Elementary School. Patrick Packer, her cousin said “Her joy came when some of her former students would visit her each week as well as inviting her to the alumni reunions. She loved her students to the very end of her life’s journey. “.
