MPD homeless quilt post

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) -- A social media post by Mobile police officers featuring a photo and text that some say mock homeless people has resulted in an apology by MPD Police Chief Lawrence Battiste.

The photo, which was posted on a private Facebook page, shows two MPD officers in uniform holding up a cardboard "quilt" of taped-together signs apparently confiscated from panhandlers.

Text accompanying the photo reads, "Wanna wish everybody in 4th precinct a Merry Christmas, especially our captain. Hope you enjoy our homeless quilt! Sincerely, Panhandler patrol."

Battiste made the following statement after the post drew wide criticism online:

“As a police department entrusted with serving and protecting our community, we offer our sincerest apology for the insensitive gesture of a Facebook post by two of our officers where they are holding up a homeless “quilt” made of panhandling signs. Although we do not condone panhandling and must enforce the city ordinances that limit panhandling, it is never our intent or desire as a police department to make light of those who find themselves in a homeless state. Rather, our position has always been to partner with community service providers to help us help those faced with homelessness with hope to improve their quality of life.”

Something to think about: I create automation so that my company can stay completive, result “workers” get laid off or new ones not hired so we “middle management” can stay employed. This trend seems to not have a fairytale ending if you play it out. What we have is a non partisan very real social problem brewing in this country and worldwide that has hit certain areas harder than others. Just keep in mind, when we the coastal Libs, as we are referred to, can no longer afford our 2.0M homes and have to retire somewhere more affordable and your job is automated away we will see who ends up homeless and how that will affect you.

concerned american

these are still your fellow Americans. If part of our society is not well, it has a tendency to spread into other aspects that are doing well. Homelessness is a complicated issue and should be not politicized, but since it is here we go.

Liberals- utilize all those social programs to help these folks

Conservatives- all that tax money that could be brought in if those that were homeless got back up on their feet and got jobs.

either flavor you pick, society wins as a whole when we help people.|

No one wants to grow up to be a junkie.

So the police chief of MOBILE, Ala. apologizes for the "insensitive quilt" that was presented as a joke from his men. What utter nonsense. I'm so sick of this outrage culture. This cardboard quilt is brilliant. If a homeless person made it, it would be hanging in a folk art museum being hailed as a masterpiece rather than scorned. A real quilter should make one of these as a record of the homeless problem.

[thumbup] That is a beautiful quilt these brave officers put together. Just as the parts and swaths were collected for the AIDS quilt in the mid-90s, these officers have collected the heartfelt signs from homeless all across the city. They then assembled them into a wonderful collage so that all could see the plight of the homeless and the officers who keep them safe.

i don't understand how people are saying this is a bad thing. Are you against homeless or something?

Being a bum is a choice, except for the insane. And the insane would not be on the street, save for "liberal" policies shuttering mental institutions. And you know what makes Jesus cry? Stupid people, and honey, you got him sobbing.

I used to drive a taxi, 12 hour shifts 5 or 6 days a week. Some "homeless" people were regular customers of mine. After hearing them refer to standing on a street corner with a cardboard sign as "going to work", I lost all respect for them.

Hates Deplorables

You folks make Jesus weep with your hatefulness and stupidity.

Most "homeless" people are there not by circumstance or bad luck, but because they intentionally make or have made poor decisions over and over and over again. They are not Saints. Sure, the "quilt" was a bit insensitive but I'll always side with a cop over a drug-addled vagrant.

I think it's funny

l!! Lighten up Libs and stop drinking the Kool-Aid! Take a walk in San Francisco or downtown L.A. and see the happiness that the libs bring to the table. Just for fun why don't all you social justice warriors check out all the cities in the U.S. that are in bad shape like Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit. Birmingham, ad nauseam and look at who runs them. All Democrats! So why don't the libs do something about it? because it is too late. Hope you don't get Hep C walking to work or the store. What you Sow you Reap Democrats! Knee deep in your own waste products.

You are not kidding. We just got back from SF this evening. It's misery there, and they created it from a once beautiful and vibrant city.

News flash...98% of the "homeless" are WORTHLESS BUMS, or WORSE. They refuse to work. They are perfectly healthy. They would rather drink or smoke crack all day and sit on their lazy a$$es than show up for work than the rest of us. Most of them are probably breaking into your house or car while you are at work, and a good 10% of them, from what I've seen, are borderline threatening, and they are a robbery looking for a place to happen. They approach me consistently ALMOST EVERY TIME I am fueling up a local truck stop.

Here's a tip for bleeding heart dummies: anyone who refuses to get up and go to work does not deserve your money, your patience, your pity, or your indulgence!

I think it is sad that it’s come to this. Most if not all homeless end up homeless for reasons outside of their control. This is not something I have always known but do a little research and you might feel a little empathy for somebody who is pushed into this situation, hopefully it will never be you.

Well.........I am pro-police. I think they do extremely well under the circumstances.

But- this was in poor taste. Some disciplinary action should be taken by the chief. Perhaps a verbal reprimand and a stern warning.

They apologized? Why? The more we give into liberal insanity, the more they feel empowered to act insane. They did nothing wrong. Grow a spine and stop apologizing when some leftist basket case is triggered by common sense or humor. Have they apologized for being anti-American, Satanic, anti-freedom, anti-human, anti-police, anti-child, or any other Antifa agenda? No? Then stop giving them any attention. I'm very disappointed in that cowardly police department.

I agree with all you say. Most of them aren't even thinking, just following the mob. They don't care about the homeless either. It's all about gaining more power.

Mike S

I think these officers can do their job and joke about the day to day stuff they deal with. They chose to share with their sup, all for a laugh. I say good on them. If this is offensive to you, try doing their job.

Guess I'm too old and not sufficiently "woke". Seems like harmless fun to me. "No Homeless People Were Harmed to Create This Post."

YES! I hate homeless bums, lazy and stupid. The police shouldn't even have to protect them. If a homeless person gets into a fight, let me get beat up. Then he'll realize he should grow up and get a job. Same with Mexicans and gang bangers.

The police should let them just kill each other.

The homeless sign was HILARIOUS! I wish I could get a copy and frame it!

Pretty unfortunate story.

And folks wonder why people hate the police. This is about as low and disgusting as one can get.

I bet the two officers are not punished in any way.

Nor should they be.

Haven't you heard Mtg - It's now a crime to offend someone and only the left get's to say what's offensive.
