MOBILE, Ala. -- Some Mobile visitors are heading back home, with a sour taste in their mouths. That's because of an incident at a local hotel after someone went on a shopping spree, stealing from the victim's luggage, inside their rooms.
The bandits got away with a good bit. The victims say jewelry worth thousands, electronics, money and medicine was taken from their luggage.
We caught up with Les and Jo Ann Mertins at the Mobile Regional Airport just before they boarded their flight back home to Texas. They say they left their room for a few hours and when they came back a lot of their valuables were gone.
"All of his medications were gone, which he has to take because he's had a stroke, and I'm disabled so part of my medications, I found out, were missing as well," said Jo Ann Mertins. "Then I looked for the jewelry and I had a set of earrings and a necklace that were missing."
It was on a sad note, that the Mertins were visiting, they were hoping to leave with a little more comfort and peace, then this happened.
"You go to a sad, awfully sad funeral and then you come home and try to just relax for a minute and then you realize, you see your backpack is open and everything is gone," Les Mertins explained.
The Mertins say they weren't the only victims. The University of North Dakota's softball team was in town for a game against South on Friday. Some of the players were also victims. One of the teammates left a comment on the hotel's Facebook page about it. The teammate says they had cash, gift cards, and even an apple watch stolen.
As they head back home, The Mertins say they still love the Port City, but this was a terrible experience.
"you feel frustrated because we're leaving here with no paperwork, no reports, just a couple of business cards," Jo Ann Mertins added.
We spoke with the hotel's General Manager, she said they won't be making a statement since the investigation is ongoing.
According to the Mertins, the hotel did give them complimentary drinks, for their trouble.
The following was released by the Mobile Police Department:
