If you drive along I-10, you'll notice a major step forward in efforts to build a new bridge over the Mobile River.
Crews started pile driving near the Texas Street and I-10 intersection.
Pile driving tests will continue over the next couple of months near the cruise terminal and along the Bayway.
The results from the tests will provide preliminary data to teams submitting proposals to design and build the project.
Public Information Officer, Allison Gregg, says a toll will be included in the final plans.
"We want people to start getting aware of that now. Right now, we don't know the rate because we are in the environmental phase. So we're gathering a lot of data. The new alignment will be tolled, but there will still be free routes along the Causeway and the Cochrane and Bankhead."
The pile driving tests should not affect morning commutes.
Most of the work will take place in a fenced-in area on the shoulder of the interstate.
