The Alabama State Port Authority has approved a $49.5 million dollar expansion of the container facility at the Port of Mobile.
This is the third phase of expansion.
This past summer, two massive cranes were brought in to the port to move larger containers on and off ships.
That was part of Phase Two.
The Phase Three expansion of the container facility at the port includes a dock extension and an additional 20 acres of yard space for new shipper and carrier business opportunities.
Officials with APM Terminals at the port say the expansion allows it to support larger vessel sizes and prepare for future growth.
Phase Three is part of a five phase long term plan.
Port officials say the dock extension will take about two years to complete while the yard will take about a year and a half to finish.
