Dauphin Island Mardi Gras parade 2019

The Krewe de la Dauphine rolls Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 on Dauphin Island.

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. -- A young child was taken to a local hospital after being struck by a golf cart during the Mardi Gras parade on Dauphin Island Saturday afternoon, officials from the island said.

Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier said it was a 4-year-old boy who was struck.

Fire Chief Brad Cox said the child received minor injuries.

Police Chief Kym Claw said the 4-year-old boy was conscious and alert at the scene but frightened. He was transported to a local hospital by a Mobile County EMS ambulance.

The operator of the golf cart received several citations, including one for leaving the scene of an accident, Claw said.

The police chief said the matter is still pending further investigation.

Fire Chief Cox said the accident happened on Bienville Boulevard near a three-way stop. It happened while the parade was rolling but before it had reached the particular location where the incident occurred, Cox and Collier said.

The golf cart was not a part of the parade, the officials said.
