The field for the 26th annual 2019 Preseason WNIT has been announced by Triple Crown Sports and the University of South Alabama women's basketball team is one of 16 teams slated to participate in the November event.
Each team will be guaranteed three games with all games played at the host institutions. The Championship Game will be aired on CBS Sports Network. First-round matchups and the entire bracket will be released later this spring. There will be 16 different conferences represented among the 16-team field.
The field includes Boise State (Mountain West), Davidson (Atlantic 10), DePaul (Big East), Drexel (Colonial Athletic), Miami OH (Mid-American), Missouri State (Missouri Valley), Oklahoma (Big 12), Oregon State (Pac-12), Pacific (West Coast Conference), Portland State (Big Sky), Prairie View A&M (Southwestern Athletic), South Alabama (Sun Belt), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Southland), UAB (Conference USA), UC Irvine (Big West) and UMKC (Western Athletic).
WNIT Director, Renee Carlson had this to say about the diverse field: "We've got a solid group of established programs from conferences with a national presence, but our mid-major teams have a proven ability to make noise and be very tough to handle. While everyone wants to eventually have a memorable postseason, teams realize they better bring their best from the very beginning of the campaign."
A dozen participating teams reached the postseason for the 2018-19 season, including South Alabama which earned an at-large bid to the WNIT. The Jaguars defeated Lamar on the road in round one before falling to Wyoming in the second round in Laramie, Wyo.
The Jaguars are coming off one of the most successful season in program history, having reached the Sun Belt Title game for the fourth time. South Alabama will return four of its five starters from a season ago and will replace just two players from a roster that compiled the most wins in program history (25.) The Jags four leading scorers, Antoinette Lewis (14.9 PPG), Savannah Jones (14.5 PPG), Shaforia Kines (12.9 PPG), and Damaya Telemaque (8.9 PPG) will all be back.
